Membership Management Musings

Adopting a Data Driven Strategy for Membership Management in 2010

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 by Jodi Broadwater
The spirit of the New Year has brought about all sorts of buzz in the association blogosphere, with bloggers projecting trends and offering advice for the year ahead. Become more mobile! Become more social! Go local!

But amid all of this great forward-thinking wisdom, I was especially encouraged by Jeff De Cagna's mention of the importance of embracing data-driven strategy in the P.I. Blog's "Top Ten 2010 Trends for Associations."

The truth is that while many associations are diligent about collecting data, very few are making effective use of that data to drive business strategy. But there's good news -- association management software can help!

Too often, association data is unintentionally monopolized by an administrator. But association management software puts data in the hands of many, providing association managers and staff at all levels the actionable data they need to make faster, better business decisions.

How? Systems like Avectra's netFORUM gives staff members the ability to personalize executive dashboards for specific data needs -- from the executive director who wants a big picture view of membership trends to the event manager who needs to track event revenue.

A colleague and I recently spoke with AGA's managing director of IT, Jim Linn, about the benefits of making data more accessible. "With Avectra, we moved from an environment where the system was held by a relative few to a system that is owned by all -- centrally by membership but able to be used effectively by all staff," he said. "That was a huge time-savings for us, and we have benefited from efficiencies with that for many years."

So as you plot your course for 2010, consider how a membership management solution might help your association make intelligent use of data. After all, what good is business data if you can't get to it or make sense of it?
